The Clarion Volume 72, Issue 24 SERVING THE BREVARD COLLEGE COMMUNITY SINCE 1935 TROUT contest: page 7 April 6, 2007 BC artists hold second iron pour by Kyle Lusk Special to The Clarion On Saturday March 31, the Brevard College Sculpture Depart ment held its second-ever iron pour The creation of cast iron sculpture has seen a surge in popu larity with college art programs over the last 10 years. The pro cess consists of melting scrap pieces of grey iron (usually from recycled radiators) in a coke and air fueled blast furnace that runs continuously, producing 150 - 200 lbs of molten iron every 15 - 20 minutes. The pouring of the metal and the preparation for the pouring are very labor intensive. This takes the entire first semes ter of their senior year During Christmas break they begin writ ing. Then they get revisions and more writing continues until April lO'*", when their books, manu scripts, memoirs, poetry, and lit erary analyses are due. This year nine English majors will present their fmal work to Brevard Col lege in order to graduate from this institution. These nine include Tom Cowan, Sarah Carlson, Lauren Fortenr, Jing Zhao, Emily Wade, Chrisi Gaskill, Amanda Ivey, Guinn Hinman, and Matt Rutherford. April 25'*' and 27**' are the days the English and other Humanities division majors will present their complete works. Sarah Carlson, 24, is writing a memoir about her adolescence in Dillon, Montana and Lynchburg, Virginia. On progress, Carlson says, ‘“I’ll be done in a week whether 1 want to be or not, but 1 don’t anticipate any major prob lems.” Carlson also said she had problems with “deciding what parts of my life to write and what parts to leave out, and deciding on the order of the pieces in the sec ond section.” During summer break Carlson will be going to Is rael to help rebuild Palestinian homes and will return to Brevard in the fall. Lauren Fortner, 21, has com piled a database of over 150 multicultural children’s books. written a research paper, which focuses on how to choose quality multicultural children’s literature and its benefits, and has created a reflection portfolio of her intern ship experience at the Brevard El ementary Library. Fortner says, “1 am almost finished. 1 am having some technical problems with the database and the formatting of the research paper 1 also have some work to do on the reflection—a lot of proofing and touching up work.” Fortner plans on going to the Graduate School of Library Science at the University of South Carolina. Matt Rutherford, 21, has writ ten a survival guide to living in London as an exchange student or intern. Rutherford says, “1 did not -see Senior Projects, page 2 What's Inside?
